What Miss Reeve’s Recipe says:

1/2 lb moist brown sugar 1 pt water Thinly peeled rind of 2 lemons Juice of 6 lemons Juice of 2 oranges 4 oz preserved ginger, finely chopped 1/2 pint chilled ginger beer. Boil sugar, water and lemon rinds.  Cool. Strain. Add strained fruit juices. Stir in ginger and chill. Add ginger beer just before serving.
Having made this now, I would suggest:
As there is an awful lot of sugar in this,  you may wish to cut down on that.  Because I was concerned at just how sweet it was, I made everything up until the ‘add ginger beer just before serving’ and placed it all in a glass jug.  Rather than add the ginger beer to the whole jug, I poured just a small amount from the jug to each glass and then topped up each glass with the ginger beer.  This meant that those who found it too sweet/not sweet enough could adjust to their own tastes.
This recipe is really good for those ‘post heavy meal’ days (ie for the alleviation of nausea – a well-known use for ginger). Also, as suggested here, for those days when you are recovering from some sort of ‘under par’ illness.
